Ingredient Focus: Lavender

24 Aug 2015

I'm starting a new series here on Amber's Beauty Talk all about ingredients. Each post will focus on one ingredient in particular and I'll be sharing the benefits of the particular ingredient and products I love using that have it in.

To kickstart, I thought I'd go for one of the most popular and widely used ingredients in the natural world; lavender. Everybody knows what lavender is and probably has a product or two on their shelf with it in, natural or not. It isn't actually my favourite scent but I've definitely grown fonder of it since going natural.
Lavender (or lavandula angustifolia) has many benefits and the most popular use is for its relaxing properties. It has a calming, soothing scent so it is widely used in products aimed to be used before bed such as relaxing bath salts and body oils. It can also be useful for treating anxiety, insomnia and restlessness.

Aside from it's scent properties, it is believed to have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties which can help heal minor burns and bug bites but also blemishes which is why it makes a great ingredient for natural skincare.

A few favourite products of mine that contain lavender include;

Circaroma Vetiver & French Lavender Body Lotion
Out of this bunch of products, this body lotion was the first that I tried and as you can see, I've almost run out! This lotion is so lightweight and comes from Circaroma's Relax & Nurture range. It has french lavender to relax as well as sunflower and jojoba oil to moisturise your skin.
I reviewed this lotion last year (review).

Schmidt's Deodorant Lavender & Sage
One of the most recent natural deodorant's I've tried and have since repurchased but in a different scent, although I do like this scent too! Schmidt's is an American deodorant company however they're available in sample sizes and larger sized tubs on A Beautiful World.

Bathing Beauty Dilly Dilly Soap
A lovely natural soap that smells of lavender. I got this when I bought the Vegan Make-Up Brushes by Bathing Beauty to wash my brushes & rid them of make-up but I can't seem to find it on the website at the minute. (I'll update this if it becomes available again)
001 Skincare Pure Lavender Hydrolat
This mist is made with 99% pure hydrolat from high grade distilled Lavender flowers and is great as a toner, hydrating spritz and as a mist to set makeup. It won Bronze in the July 2015 Free From Skincare Awards in the Fresh & Fragrant category. I love the nozzle on this bottle, it sprays such a light mist so its great for over make-up or just as a skin refreshing pick-me-up.

Odylique SOS Spot-On Serum
This serum has lavender in it for it's anti-inflammatory, antiseptic properties. It's great for cuts and burns but also blemishes. I like to apply this overnight on any big red spots that appear and it helps to reduce them in size by the next morning. It is 95% organic and 100% natural.

Bloom Remedies Serenity Slumber Body Oil
This body oil comes from a wonderful small artisan brand from Cornwall. I met the owner, Marie, at the Love Natural Love Organic show in July and she was just so lovely! This oil retails for £8.50 so it is very budget friendly and contains oils of lavender, neroli, geranium, ylang ylang and cedarwood amongst others making it perfect for applying before bed.

Earth Conscious Lavender Deodorant
This is one of the best natural deodorants I've tried. Although I'm not that keen on the scent of it, it's still lovely to use and keeps me stink-free for the most part. I did experience some slight irritation however that's not unusual for me with natural deodorants.

Nathalie Bond Lavender & Chamomile Body Oil
This is the newest addition to my collection and a firm favourite. It's perfect before bed as it sinks in quickly but the scent lingers and helps me to relax. The chamomile is soothing as well as moisturising and the blend smells beautiful.

What are your favourite lavender products?
