Health and Fitness

7 Aug 2013

This is a bit of a different post today - not totally beauty related but I think the two go hand in hand with each other. Since the beginning of the year I have been on a health & fitness kick. This isn't just a fad diet or a quick-fix to lose weight I am changing my lifestyle to make me feel better everyday!

I signed up to Race for Life back in March as I wanted something to focus on; something to make me want to go to the gym and eat healthy! I knew that if I had a goal it would help me stick to my routine as I didn't want to do badly in my run! I actually got ill about three weeks before the run and I was so annoyed! I think I had over-done it in the gym and wasn't eating sufficiently to keep my immune system healthy. I had mouth ulcers, tonsillitis and generally just felt unwell. I stopped training for about 10 days and then gradually got back into it. I did an 8k run the week before my run and felt a lot better. During the run my right leg started hurting around 6-7k and I was gutted. I tried to stretch it out a little but carried on running as it was hurting just as much when I was walking. It stopped hurting for a while at about 8k but by the time I finished I was hobbling out of the park! I didn't want to stop though as I had been training for about 10 weeks and couldn't let that all go to waste! In the end I finished in 57:58 minutes; I was so proud of myself and cried at the finish line! After the run I got straight to the sauna and just relaxed and sat in the jacuzzi until I looked like a prune!

After the race with my medal!

I admit that I have gone a little off track since I finished my race and have had a few naughty take-aways and sweets but I am going on holiday at the end of August so I am getting back on track! At the gym I usually do about 25 minutes of cardio and then I pair it with ab exercises to slim my tummy down. This has been my main concern as everywhere else (legs, bum etc) has become pretty toned from all my running but my tum just seems to be the most difficult part. This is down to my diet, I know, but it is so hard to say no to some of my favourite foods every now & then! This would be one bit of advice though, don't cut out everything that is bad for you. You deserve a treat every now & then and one bad meal won't make you fat!

I have found loads of great workouts like this on Back on Pointe (see link below) that are so good for toning up and they are hard work! I pair this with my cardio and then I choose whether I do an arms or a legs workout and switch it up every time I'm at the gym!

A few more bits of advice would be drinking enough water everyday. It speeds up your metabolism, keeps you energised and best of all, it's excellent for your skin! Sleep is also an essential part of staying healthy. If you don't get enough sleep at night your body won't be able to function properly the next day and you will weigh yourself down! Something else that could hinder your efforts is looking at fitspo picture on twitter or on the Internet. Yes, it's great to have something to aim for but most of those photos have probably been photoshopped, the models are tanned and oiled up and they have loads of lighting on them to make them look more toned. You can only work with what you have; just be yourself but make you better!

Here are a few websites that I find helpful when I'm on the lookout for a new workout:

I hope this short & sweet post gives you some inspiration to kick-start your workouts and become a healthier & happier person! If you want me to do more posts like this with maybe some specified workouts/healthy eating ideas then let me know in the comments below!
